TEHRAN (IQNA) – Even if they have large family or have many friends, some people find themselves the loneliest in the world because of their characteristics, one of which is being miserly.

Being miserly

God refers to Bukhl (miserliness, parsimoniousness, avarice) in many verses of the Quran. God sometimes gives some people blessings that are more than what they need so that they will share some of it with others. If they refuse to do so, they are suffering from Bukhl.

God rebukes this in many verses and sometimes warns that punishment in hell awaits those who have Bukhl.

“Those who are avaricious of the favors that God has given them should not think that this is good for them. Avarice is evil and whatever they are avaricious about will be tied to their necks on the Day of Judgment. To God belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. God is Well Aware of what you do.” (Verse 180 of Surah Al-Imran)

The main reason for things like Bukhl is lack of faith and trust in God. If one considers God to be omnipotent, he should realize that all good and all blessings are from Him.

If all good and all blessings are from God, then we should believe His pledges and know that if we spend our money for a good cause and for helping others, God will multiply it for us and give us many more blessings.

Imam Ali (AS) says that the reason why some people have Bukhl is because they have doubts about God’s power and His promises.

Bukhl is not just about wealth and money. Some people have Bukhl when it comes to sharing the knowledge with others. Some even have Bukhl in greeting others. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said the most miserly person is one who has Bukhl is greeting others.

Naturally, if someone has Bukhl, he will lose his friends and companions and becomes lonely.

So one of the most obvious outcomes of being miserly is becoming lonely because such a person wants all blessings and all good for himself and does not care about others. Thus, others realize that no good from him is going to reach them and so leave him.

That is why Imam Ali (AS) says that a miser has no friends.
